Summary of scientific research
He began his studies in atomic energy, becoming Head of the Lab. Inst. of Nuclear Physics, Siberian Dept., Academy of Sciences (1961-70). After continuing his interests in nuclear physics he turned increasingly to high temperature physics and space research, being Director of the USSR Space Research Institute (1973-88). At a more detailed level he is a specialist in global warming, plasma physics, controllable thermonuclear synthesis, and cosmic ray physics.
