Following the Magisterium of Pope Francis, especially the Encyclical Laudato Si’, as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the care of our common home in the face of the tragedy of global warming due to the intensive use of fossil fuels (LS §23) and on the crime against humanity of the growing forms of modern slavery (ODS 8.7), the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) together with the Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (PAS) are honoured to offer this Transport Union and Manufacturers Summit in order to consider and discern the possible solutions that can be provided by the indispensable world of transport, be it to climate change or to the human dignity of each man and woman.
The Summit aims to contribute to the social and ethical debate of the people of our time on integral sustainable development in response to the demands of the Laudato Si’ and the SDGs, with special reference to the care of the environment and human ecology, which Laudato Si’ rightly refers to as “integral ecology”.
It can be said that saving the planet and promoting the human dignity of every man and woman is today a new ethical imperative that emanates both from the mandate of the different religions, and from the practical wisdom represented by the current leaders of Nations and the most accredited sages and scientists around the world. Indeed, headed by Pope Francis, the representatives of the world’s most influential religions have condemned human trafficking and environmental deterioration on several occasions and, at the same time, the United Nations, in the 2015 Plenary Session, during which the Pope’s speech took place, have unanimously ratified the objectives of sustainable development, following the auspices of philosophical and scientific reason, to safeguard each person and their habitat. The Summit will focus on the specific issues of the respective transport and industry sector, and, through such an approach and work of discernment, we want to believe it will help create a greater global awareness of this serious problem, as well as implement its solutions in the face of indicated current challenges.
During this Summit, participants will have the opportunity to exchange their experiences, concerns and good practices regarding respect for the environment and the dignity of all human beings.
The first day will start with a brief introduction by Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo on the indications that emerge from the Magisterium of Pope Francis, while on the second day the renowned Prof. Jeffrey Sachs will introduce the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
We want to hope that the culture of dialogue and discernment outlined by Pope Francis, which this new Summit intends to carry out with the leaders of the transport union and manufacturers – as previous PAS summits have done with different leaders of various social groups and classes, such as religious leaders, mayors, judges and doctors from different parts of the world – may decisively move society, from top to bottom and vice versa, to face the challenge of our time and feel “the call to a deep ecological conversion”.
